Cardoman University Library: Water pipe leak
Summary
The university library is open quite late on a Saturday night because of impending exams. A reader tells Charles, a young staff member working at the library's circulation desk, that water is pouring from the ceiling in a busy basement reading room. Running down to the basement, Charles sees a leak in the water pipe immediately above the bookshelves. On his way back to the circulation desk, he remembers that there is a copy of the disaster response plan at the desk.
The problem
What should Charles do when he reaches his desk?
Other than seeking help from others, are there any on-the-spot actions he can take himself?
What should he do about the readers affected by the leak?
Answer:
What should Charles do when he reaches his desk?
Charles consults the disaster response plan, finds the location of the emergency unit supply box, and sends another staff member to take the box to the site of the leak. Then, consulting the disaster telephone tree, he contacts the library director and explains the problem. The library director then initiates further action by contacting the facilities manager and the emergency coordinator.
Other than seeking help from others, are there any
on-the-spot actions he can take himself?
Immediately following his call to the library director, Charles goes to the site of the leak and with the help of another staff member removes the polyethylene sheeting, cutter, and tape from the emergency unit supply box. He then drapes the plastic over the shelves and secures it in such a way that the water diverted by the sheeting does not affect other books. And he sets out containers to catch the dripping water and reduce the spread of standing water.
What should he do about the readers affected by the
leak?
Charles then cordons off the affected area with the cordon tape to keep readers out. Finally, he meets the emergency coordinator at the door and takes him to the site.
